The inspections found that bilge keel supports had cracked at the transverse bracket connection, well-placed sources told Upstream.
Bilge keels run laterally to the main keel and are designed to reduce roll movements, also dampening the loads placed on the mooring system.
In an e-mailed statement, Chevron confirmed that the cracks had been identified in the passive stabiliser fins, and stressed that the company’s next steps would be carried out with a “primary focus on safety for people, the facility as well as protection of the environment”.
