Two Chinese players have reported major hydrocarbon discoveries at Tarim in the country’s northwest province of Xinjiang, the first such claims by independent companies in the remote desert basin, writes Xu Yihe.

Power utility Beijing Energy said its Ketan-1 well on the Keping North block hit 78 metres of pay, proving the presence of commercial hydrocarbons.

An appraisal programme calls for the drilling of three wells in the eastern and western part of the block.
