Well-placed industry officials said the contract signed on 10 May reflects increased Chinese activities in Iran's oil and gas industry amid the slow improvement of US-Iran relations.
The deal has committed CNOOC to initial drilling obligations in the gas project.
They said drilling will first use an offshore rig already in operation in Iran, but company service unit China Offshore Service Ltd.
