China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) has agreed a deal to charter a domestically-built, ultra-deepwater semi-submersible drilling rig for up to 300 days for operations in Chinese waters.

Industry officials said the newbuild Alfa — now renamed the Frigstad Shekou, according to the Norwegian owner — has been taken on through a charter agreement between CNPC’s offshore engineering division China Petrol­eum Offshore Engineering (CPOE) and Tianjin Kaisheng Offshore Engineering Leasing, the leasing unit of rig builder CIMC Raffles.
