China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC) claims it has made an onshore shale oil discovery in Bohai Bay in northern China, writes Xu Yihe.

The company is aiming to build up 1 million tonnes per annum (7.35 million barrels) of production capacity in the area by 2025, with proven reserves expected to reach 300 million tonnes at that time.

CNPC said that two discovery wells, Guandong 1701H and Guandong 172H, have flowed continuously for 260 days at between 18 and 27 tonnes per day.
