A coalition of political parties led by Xanana Gusmao has won the Timor-Leste national election.

The Alliance for Change and Progress (AMP) won 34 of the 65 seats, while the Fretilin party led by Mari Alkatiri won 23 seats.

This year's election was an early poll called by the country's president because the 2017 coalition government, led by Fretilin, was unable to gain enough votes in parliament to pass its "Programme for the Seventh Constitutional Government".
