Cobalt International Energy may look to farm down stakes in any of three Gulf of Mexico deep-water plays if the sale of blocks off Angola runs into further trouble, after a $1.75 billion deal with Sonangol came unstuck this week.

In a packed second-quarter results presentation, the US independent also revealed two US Gulf dry holes, a fresh discovery off Angola and the closure of its Mexico office, while it might also drop a charter for a Rowan drillship early.
