The Car Wash probe has won fervent support from graft-weary Brazilians who see the unflinching vigour with which Judge Sergio Moro and federal prosecutors have gone about unearthing corruption at state-controlled oil company Petrobras and beyond.
Public outrage about corruption has drowned out any concerns about the more controversial aspects of Moro’s methods — including police phone taps, holding suspects for long periods of “preventative” custody, heavy reliance on plea-bargain testimonies and carefully timed leaking of some of those testimonies.
