The floating liquefied natural gas concept was conceived by Anglo-Dutch supermajor Shell 50 years ago, but only in recent years has the technology been brought to bear.

Four FLNG vessels have been built and started operation: PFLNG 1, for Petronas, at the Kanowit field in Malaysia, which began operation in 2016; Shell's Prelude FLNG off Australia, which began production last year; Hilli Episeyo FLNG, for service at Perenco's Sanaga Sud field in Cameroon, also in 2018; and the Tango FLNG unit, which started operations for Argentina's YPF in 2019.
