China could need to drill another 700 wells to meet the shale gas production target set by the government for 2020 in order to replenish gas throughput at producing wells in southwest China’s Sichuan basin, writes Xu Yihe.

Industry officials said that, although the central government has already trimmed the 2020 shale target from between 30 billion and 60 billion cubic metres to 30 Bcm, the latest target may still be too ambitious.
