South Sudan could lose up to $28 billion if the civil conflict continues for another four years, according to a policy brief released last week by a London-based political activist group, the People’s Democratic Movement (PDM).

A breakdown in the peace process and a looming humanitarian disaster has worsened economic conditions, already characterised by famine and disinvestment.

“Social and economic losses over a 20-year period will be greater if knock-on effects are taken into consideration, putting the figure between $122 billion and $158 billion,” it said.
