Contractors throw their hats into ring for Kitimat receiving terminal

KITIMAT LNG in the Canadian province of British Columbia has received expressions of interest from several large construction contractors, including CB&I and the Aker Kvaerner-IHI joint venture, in anticipation of potential invitations to bid later this year to design and build an LNG receiving terminal, writes Anthony Guegel.

"The EPC contractor we hope will be selected this year," said Kitimat LNG vice president Ilene Schmaltz.

Front-end engineering and design work was completed late last year by CDS in Vancouver, she said.

Original FEED work was started by Tractebel in 2004 but the relationship ended about the time that Tractebel changed ownership.

The project has already been awarded permits and can rightfully lay claim to be the only fully permitted regasification terminal on the west coast of either the US or Canada.
