Marine engineer Justice Opelamina Derefaka was chosen in July 2017 to head up the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme, a radical initiative to secure flaredown across his native Niger Delta by 2020 and arrest the environmental degradation that continues to scar the oil creeks.

Some $3.5 billion of inward investment might flow from an array of gas monetisation schemes which, if implemented correctly, will salvage the billion cubic feet per day of gas going up in smoke, currently breathed by the inhabitants, polluting their farms and corroding their houses.
