"Plangas is in no sense intended to substitute Bolivian imports, for the scenario is one of very robust expansion in our domestic consumption, but the project will reduce dependence on imported gas," Petrobras general manager for exploration and production in the southern regions Jose Antonio Figueiredo told a Brazilian seminar recently.
The figures are intended to take into account projections that Brazilian consumption of gas will more than double to 100 million cubic feet per day by the end of the decade, and Petrobras has not set out any formal target of "self-sufficiency" that would end gas imports.
