Calgary-based Suncor Energy and Norway’s Equinor have filed plans to go wildcatting off Newfoundland & Labrador, Canada, writes Iain Esau.

These planned new drilling campaigns off the province are in addition to half-a-dozen exploration programmes — submitted by Husky Energy, CNOOC International, BP, ExxonMobil, Chevron and BHP — that the Canadian authorities are considering for approval.

While Suncor’s campaign, which it calls Tilt Cove, is focused on drilling up to 12 wells in Exploration Licence 1161 in the proven Jeanne d’Arc basin, Equinor is proposing to go exploring ELs 1159 and 1160 in the sparsely drilled Central Ridge play just to the east of the basin.
