Ecopetrol has taken a $252 million charge on the Repsol-operated Leon discovery and a follow-up appraisal well in the deep-water US Gulf of Mexico, once seen as a promising find that had spawned a concept study on development options.
The Colombian state oil company has a 40% share in Keathley Canyon Block 642, which in 2014 saw the well drilled to 9684 metres, coming across 150 metres of net oil pay within a column of over 400 metres.
