Blocks 39 and 40 lie in the Gulf of Guayaquil in water depths ranging from about 10 metres to nearly 2000 metres while blocks 4 and 5 are both onshore and offshore and sit adjacent to the producing Santa Elena peninsula fields to the north and the Amistad field to the south.
The Quito government, headed by recently elected President Lucio Guitierrez, appointed IHS Energy to assist in promoting the acreage and also to compile a comprehensive data inventory.
