The contract calls for delivery in the third quarter of 2015 and includes an option for an additional drillship of the same design.
The drillship, designated DS-10, is the same GF12000 design as the Ensco DS-8 and DS-9 which are under construction and scheduled for delivery in 2014.
All three rigs are awaiting contracts but Ensco chief executive Dan Rabun said the company placed the order because of operator interest in the design’s “capabilities that improve drilling productivity and fuel efficiency”.
