Home to 17% of Europe’s oil shale deposits, Estonia uses the resource to generate 91% of its electricity needs, but the process of heating the oil shale to produce hydrocarbons also leaves behind millions of tonnes of waste rock each year.
Tallinn-based Kadarik & Tuur Architects (KTA), whose last job was to design the Estonian pavilion for the prestigious Expo Milan 2015, has converged on plans to stack the cuttings in the shape of pyramids after a request from a council leader in the remote town of Aidu in north-eastern Estonia.
“Instead
