Ethiopia has provisionally agreed to mediate in a simmering dispute between Somalia and Kenya over their contested maritime boundary, despite the case remaining before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) since 2014, hindering upstream activities in a triangular wedge of shallow and deep water.

Ethiopian Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed, who also chairs the Djibouti-based Intergovernmental Authority on Development, a regional security organisation comprising Eritrea, Sudan, South Sudan and Uganda, has suggested a meeting on 13 July.
