The proposal emerged from a gathering of EU and Central Asian officials in Budapest to discuss the proposed¤10 billion Nabucco project to carry Caspian Sea and Middle East gas to Europe via 3300 kilometres of pipelines transiting Turkey and central Europe.
The Nabucco project was discussed as an option to growing dependence on Russia for gas supplies, which were cut for a few days this winter for the second time in recent years during a price dispute between Russia and Ukraine.
