Europeans were the first to recognise that carbon capture and storage could meet their ambitious political commitments to combat climate change.
The European Commission’s announcement in December 2008 that it would help fund up to 12 commercial-sized demonstration projects, followed by a directive for member states to enact legislation on geological storage, put Europe firmly in the forefront.
However, industry observers believe that early lead has now been lost.
