AN INCIDENT with failed flexible risers on the Lula field could usher Petrobras away from its long-established penchant for subsea solutions in Brazil's pre-salt play that rely heavily on flexible pipe, writes Gareth Chetwynd.

The Petrobras-led consortium that is currently tendering for the first full-scale floating production, storage and offloading vessel on the Libra development signalled recently that a tender to supply and install subsea systems will be open to suppliers of rigid pipe solutions, and not only flexibles.
