US environmental regulators say the oil industry has been allowing much more methane to escape into the atmosphere than previously thought — but the industry is crying foul over the methods used to support those claims.
In its latest emissions inventory, the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) significantly increased the amount of methane emissions it believes are coming from the oil and gas industry, and said it is now the largest contributor of methane emissions in the country, overtaking agriculture.
