The company has undoubtedly raised the pedigree of UK shale by becoming the first major European player to take up a position in the play.

It sees much promise in its acreage in Lancashire’s Bowland shale, but the company cautions against counting its value before a well has been drilled.

Moreover, the significance of its investment — of up to $68 million in a maximum of three blocks — should not be overstated given the scale of the French company’s portfolio.
