Harry Tzimitras, director of the Peace Research Institute Oslo - Cyprus Centre, suggests that the current tense situation off Cyprus can be traced back to the collapse in 2017 of UN-brokered peace talks between Cyprus and what Ankara calls the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus, writes Iain Esau.

Speaking in a personal capacity, he says tensions have been exacerbated by unreasonable expectations of the benefits — vastly over-inflated by politicians on both sides of the island — that could accrue to all Cypriots from the recent gas discoveries.
