INDIA has discovered a large and “highly enriched” accumulation of natural gas hydrates in the Bay of Bengal that has the potential to be produced, the US Geological Survey (USGS) has claimed.

The US-based agency said the new gas hydrates find “is the first discovery of its kind in the Indian Ocean that has the potential to be producible”.

Walter Guidroz, programme coordinator at USGS Energy Resources, claimed that such discoveries “will help unlock the global energy resource potential of gas hydrates” and would help to define the technology required for its production.
