Providing a rare combination of size and pressure, the chamber can hold control pods and suchlike measuring up to 1.2 metres in diameter and 2.7 metres long.
It can then squeeze them to a pressure of up to 440 bar, simulating conditions to be found at a water depth of 4400 metres.
GE has spent about $5 million on the chamber and the building it is housed in.
