The tendency of Ghanaian governments to politicise state-owned Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) has been compounded under the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and will damage investor confidence, according to a pair of independent industry watchdogs, writes Barry Morgan.
Steve Manteaw, co-chair of the Ghana Extractive Industries Initiative (GEITI), said: “Although previous governments did the same... it appears that GNPC is being treated as an extension of NPP bureaucracy with its party chairman chairing the (corporation’s) board and appointing a former deputy youth organiser to head up the GNPC foundation.”
