UK exploration chief Donal O'Driscol said the discovery contains between 20 million and 50 million barrels of oil equivalent and that options include developing the find as a subsea tie-back to its Buzzard project, 17 kilometres away, or Ettrick and a "potential" stand-alone scheme.
If Golden Eagle is tied back to Buzzard, Nexen officials previously said first oil would flow in 2012, whereas 2009 would be a potential target if it is a satellite to Ettrick.
