The Australian government has begun a formal process to consider whether controls on exports of liquefied natural gas from Queensland are required in 2018, writes Russell Searancke.

The Australian Domestic Gas Security Mechanism was introduced on 1 July 2017, and allows the government to intervene to ensure there is enough gas supply to meet domestic demand.

The Queensland LNG projects that are drawing gas from the domestic market will be required to limit their exports or find offsetting sources of new gas.
