Conservationists fear that oil exploration of the lakebed off Rozel Point could ruin the prominent salt-encrusted basalt rock sculpture known as the Spiral Jetty.
The jetty was built by artist Robert Smithson in 1970.
Canadian explorer Pearl Montana E&P filed for a permit on 11 January to drill from floating barges anchored to the lake bottom about eight kilometres south-west of the jetty.
