An ongoing debate between Environmental Defence Canada (EDC) and federal agency Environment Canada came to a head in mid-April when the government was accused of ignoring violations of the federal Fisheries Act.
The complaint was filed with Nafta’s environmental side-body, the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), by EDC, US-based Natural Resources Defense Council, and three Canadian citizens.
The coalition claims toxins from tailings ponds are leaking and contaminating the surface waters and groundwater in the Athabasca watershed.
