State-owned electricity company Perusahaan Listrik Negara (PLN) has begun using biodiesel for the first time at Gresik, which provides 12% of the power to the Java-Bali transmission system.

The plant's engines are being fuelled by B5 biodiesel, which is 95% diesel and 5% fatty acid methyl esters (Fame)—a product made from crude palm oil.

The Gresik, Java, plant will use about 400,000 kilolitres of bio- diesel annually and, if the testing is successful, the mix will be used at PLN's other plants across the archipelago.
