Water has been gushing out of the mined-out pit since October, when employees at the oil sands operations initially detected the leak.
Water is often encountered when recovering bitumen from a mine. However, in this case it was like “taking the cork out of a bottle”, said the Alberta Energy Resources Conservation Board (ERCB).
“There was some sort of geological anomaly that provided access to a deeper saline aquifer and the water started coming out at a very high rate,” said and ERCB spokesman.
