Russia's Gazprom Neft has joined Novatek, the nation's largest independent gas producer, in the race to explore potential hydrocarbon resources in the Gydan Peninsula, which spans northern parts of West and East Siberia.

Between last November and this January, the state-controlled oil producer secured exploration and development licences for two major blocks in the eastern part of the peninsula, Leskinsky and Pukhutsayakhsky, based on its its extensive field operations experience in remote areas of the neighbouring Yamal Peninsula.
