NORWAY’S accident investigation board (AIBN) has concluded that April’s fatal helicopter crash was probably caused by a fatigue fracture in a gear, similar to a UK crash in 2009.
After retrieving parts scattered on land and in the sea and examining them closely, the board found a fatigue crack in one of the aircraft’s eight second-stage planet gears.
The crack has gone undetected by magnetic sensors in the gear box because it did not give off any metal particles, according to a preliminary report released by the board this week.
