The change could represent a breakthrough at Chicontepec, a field that holds about one-third of Pemex’s proven reserves but where tricky tight carbonate reservoirs have confounded efforts to boost output, despite billions of dollars of investment.

Pemex has drilled 23 horizontal wells to date at Chicontepec, where the Mexican state-run operator produces a little more than 80,000 bpd from about 2000 total wells, but those horizontal probes account for roughly 11% of total production, Pemex vice president for E&P business development Sergio Guaso said at the DUG Permian conference in Dallas.
