France's Total became Denmark's second-largest oil and gas producer through its $7.45 billion acquisition of Maersk Oil in 2018, and leapt to first place earlier this year when it completed a takeover of Chevron's Danish assets, writes Ole Ketil Helgesen.

Total took over Maersk Oil's entire organisation, portfolio, obligations and rights and now holds a 43.2% operating interest in the Danish Underground Consortium, a joint venture that covers almost 90% of Denmark's oil and gas production.
