Health & Safety Executive (HSE) inspectors served an Improvement Notice, giving Maersk Drilling until 31 January to rectify the problem.
“There is a risk of smoke ingress into the accommodation block because ventilation shutdown cannot be initiated in accordance with the arrangements as detailed in the safety case,” HSE said.
Maersk Drilling said the smoke detection was not required under UK law but was listed in the rig’s safety case.
