HYUNDAI Heavy Industries has assembled a newbuild drilling rig using its novel 'onshore deck-mating' method, a technology that allows units to be built virtually anywhere given enough space. Development of the system was spurred by factors including the need to overcome slot availability problems in drydocks -- where rigs are traditionally constructed -- and a tight delivery schedule. Rig-type offshore structures are generally fabricated in a shipyard drydock by stacking blocks sequentially from lower to upper levels, HHI explains.
