Indonesian President Joko Widodo has vetoed the development plan offered by Japanese operator Inpex for a large-scale floating liquefied natural gas vessel to exploit the company’s giant Abadi field on the remote Masela production sharing contract.

However, Coordinating Minister for Maritime Affairs Rizal Ramli — who lobbied for onshore liquefaction — believes that Inpex will not walk away from Abadi, where it has invested more than $2 billion on exploration, appraisal and development studies.
