The controversial Iran petroleum contract (IPC) has cleared another hurdle by winning parliamentary backing after prolonged delays.

The Majlis (parliament) approval paves the way for the Oil Ministry to proceed with tenders to develop Iranian oil and gas fields after years of sanctions.

Assadollah Qara-Khani, spokesman for the Majlis Energy Commission, said however any new contracts with international oil companies have to be reviewed by parliament to ensure they comply with the law.
