The plan would cost an estimated $100 million, according to Iraqi Drilling Company head Zuhair Shakir.

News of the drilling programme on Monday coincided with a shutdown of some the country's southern refining and crude exporting facilities because of power failures. However, exports seemed set to resume next week through the northern pipeline through Turkey.

The drilling plan will be implemented in co-operation with the occupying US forces and will add 240,000 barrels per day to output, Shakir said.
