Activist US investor Jana Partners is attempting to block EQT's proposed $6.7 billion acquisition of fellow Appalachian basin player Rice Energy, a deal that would create the US' largest natural gas producer.
Jana this week disclosed a 5.8% stake in EQT that it has been building for months. This position makes Jana EQT's fourth largest investor.
The deal with Rice was reportedly executed without Jana's knowledge.
