The programme of more than 30 wells will be conducted at 16 coastal locations from Mie to Shizouka prefectures, according to Meti officials.
The programme, conducted by a joint venture of Japex and Teikoku Oil, is intended to both confirm the presence of significant gas accumulations and to test drilling technology. The deposits are expected to be located at sub-surface depths of between 300 and 400 metres in water depths of up to 2000 metres.
