Tokyo-based Japex has started bitumen production from its delayed Hangingstone steam-assisted gravity drainage oil sands project in Alberta, Canada, writes Luke Johnson.

Production started on 3 August at a rate of about 1000 barrels per day, the company said.

The facility will gradually ramp up to its full capacity of 20,000 bpd after all 32 well pairs come online, likely by the second half of 2018.
