Industry sources said that, after lengthy talks, KBR secured an "early works" contract which involves preparing the Afungi LNG site near Palma in Cabo Delgado province before the arrival of the main turnkey contractor, probably next year.
KBR is already understood to have deployed personnel and equipment at Afungi and built a pioneer camp.
However, access to the remote site was hampered recently when a storm destroyed two road bridges between Pemba and Palma - the key supply route to Afungi.
