Keppel Corporation came into being as Keppel Shipyard in 1968 — three years after Singapore gained independence — though its history stretches back over a century.

British ship captain Henry Keppel first landed in Singapore in 1848 and discovered a natural deep-water harbour at Tanjong Pagar.

This harbour was called New Harbour until the turn of the 20th Century when the then-acting governor of Singapore, Sir Alexander Swettenham, re-named it Keppel Harbour.
