Kuwait and Iraq have appointed UK energy advisory firm ERC Equipoise to prepare a study for the joint development of oilfields on their common border.

The move is designed to put to rest a long-standing border dispute that prompted former Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein to invade Kuwait for its alleged theft of Iraqi oil through illegal drilling.

The official Kuwait news agency KUNA said the ERC will come up with recommendations for the development of the Safwan-Al-Abdali and South Rumaila-Ratqa fields.
